Sintra e queques | Sintra and muffins

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a romantic by nature. And in a day threatening rain, nothing better than going to the most romantic place in the world (or at least the most romantic place in the world for those who are pregnant and can not put a foot on a plane!): Sintra. We were fortunate to enjoy lots of romance, almost no rain and a late breakfast in a place that once was the ancient Fábrica de Queijadas Finas Mathilde (1850) and that now is "Saudade". But when we got home, someone opened the faucet and for that reason, and for many other reasons I will not enumerate, we felt we deserved some chocolate muffins. With chocolate chips. And chocolate color. And everything that chocolate can provide. Best of all is that the muffins are super easy to make. I got the recipe from one of my favorite blogs, Smitten Kitchen and recommend them to those who need comfort on rainy day (and even with sun they are great).

This was the jam weekend. On Saturday we made tomato jam and my nephews Martha and Martin had their hands full. Always under the supervision of my mother (which is in fact the only one that knows how to make jam), Martin showed a huge interest in weigh the tomatoes and sugar, getting to know what is a pound. Marta was more into getting her hands dirty and so she helped to remove the seeds before the tomatoes got into the pan. Parallel to all this while the jam was cooking we still had time to play tennis and to throw a few balls into the neighbor's yard. My mother does everything in the kitchem by heart, but the recipe is more or less this one, with less sugar.

In the end we turned all the pots upside down, like I read in here. I also have this book that is really pratical and gave me the idea of making melon jam on suday!

Weekend

O meu tio Quim tirou as fotografias das abelhas. Há mais aqui.
My uncle Quim took
the photos of the bees. See more in here.
This weekend I was at my grandparent’s house. It's always good to know that there is still a place in the world where the mobile network doesn’t work. Definitely the spring is about to install: the constant work of bees is a good example! The rosemary is undoubtedly attractive to these workers and there was a constant zum zum during Saturday and Sunday. Which brings me to the Centro de Ciência Viva of Proença-a-Nova, where my parents took me, and has a new course of beekeeping, starting the next 25th March. My grandfather had many hives, but nowadays we buy the honey (which is not bad because we have lot’s of work between the olives, the harvest and the fruit trees that my father plants.) Speaking of honey, I think it would be pity not talking about the honey biscuits that my grandmother used to do when cooking bread, and since my mother and my aunt do all the recipes by heart here is this link with a great recipe.

O inicio do ano | Beginning a new year

Estou agora a começar o quilt! I'm still in the beginning...

+ Eu comecei a fazer um "quilt" e descobri estes dois blogs: a quilt is nice e crazy mom quilts que muito me têm ajudado nas instruções;

With the New Year many things have happened: + Rosa Pomar has a new site (and a really nice one): it makes me want to return to Japan immediately. Full of books and wonderful fabrics now it’s worth to order in Portugal!
+
I started to make a "Quilt" and found these two blogs: “a quilt is nice” and “crazy quilts” that have helped me a lot with the instructions;

+
I started to make more Japanese food on a daily basis, grabbing the idea that we brought from Japan that there is life beyond the sushi. Just Hungry and Just Bento are two of my favorite sites and the next experience it will be this soup.

+
I decided to go for a sewing course. I will try Europa school in Lisbon, but I still love my old Singer book and I would love to go here.

However, I still post some Christmas about filhoses, bread or olive cookies (despite there are no written recipes in my grandparents house). This week-end we will go again for the "village" (as my nephew Martim says) to do the pruning of the vines.
